How You Can Stay Motivated During the Long Writing Journey

Updated: Sep 10, 2025

Writing a book is a big adventure — exciting, challenging, and sometimes, downright tough. Staying motivated can feel like climbing a steep hill with no clear summit in sight!

But hey—writers everywhere face this struggle, so it isn't just you. The good news is that there are simple strategies you can use to keep your momentum going, even when motivation dips.

Set small, manageable goals. Big projects can be overwhelming. Instead of staring at the whole mountain, focus on smaller hills. Set daily or weekly word count goals, or aim to finish a chapter or scene. Small wins build confidence and create a sense of progress.

For example, committing to write just 300 words a day can feel doable and adds up quickly over time. Celebrate hitting those milestones—every word counts!

Create a writing routine. Writing is easier to maintain when it becomes part of your daily rhythm. Find a time of day that works best for you—morning, lunch break, or late at night—and stick to it. Even if it’s just 15–30 minutes, regular writing sessions keep your ideas fresh and your story moving.

Try to create a dedicated writing space—whether it’s a cozy corner, a coffee shop, or a library—to get you in the right mindset.

Accept imperfection. Perfectionism can be a major motivation killer. Your first draft doesn’t need to be flawless—it just needs to exist. Give yourself permission to write messy, incomplete, or rough passages. You can always revise later.

Remember, even bestselling authors rewrite and edit extensively. The key is to keep the words flowing.

Find your support system. Writing can feel lonely, but it doesn’t have to be. Join a writing group, online forum, or local workshop. Sharing your progress, challenges, and successes with others who understand the journey can boost your motivation and accountability.

Plus, feedback from fellow writers can offer fresh ideas and encouragement.

Mix it up and stay inspired. If you’re stuck or feeling bored, switch things up. Try writing from a different character’s perspective, experiment with a new scene, or take a break to read books that inspire you.

Sometimes stepping away briefly or exploring your story in a new way reignites your passion.

Reward yourself. Celebrate your writing milestones! Treat yourself to a favorite snack, a walk outside, or a little break after reaching your goals. Positive reinforcement helps train your brain to associate writing with reward.

Remember your why. Whenever motivation wanes, remind yourself why you started writing in the first place. Is it to share a story that matters? To express yourself creatively? To connect with readers? Keeping your purpose front and center can give you the push you need to keep going.

Writing a book is a marathon, not a sprint. Motivation will ebb and flow, and that’s perfectly normal. When we set goals, build routines, accept imperfection, and find support, we can keep moving forward—even on the tough days.

So, grab your pen or keyboard, take a deep breath, and keep telling your story. The world is waiting.
